Vegan in Amsterdam: the coziest hotel & the most delicious hotspots in the canal city

Auf einer Brücke in Amsterdam mit Blick auf die Grachten

Amsterdam is a city full of charm, culture and culinary experiences. If you’re traveling as a vegan, you’ll find real treasures here that will make your heart beat faster. In this blog article, I’ll take you on a journey through some of the best vegan spots in the city – from charming hotels to the most delicious restaurants. Get ready for an unforgettable vacation that will inspire you and tantalize your taste buds.

Amsterdam is calling

Our trip to Amsterdam got off to a relaxed start as we flew directly from Salzburg with Ryanair. The flight time was just about an hour and a half – perfect for a short weekend getaway or a spontaneous city trip. The journey was uncomplicated and quick, so we arrived in the beautiful canal city in no time at all and our adventure could begin. From the airport, we took an UBER in a Tesla to the hotel.

The Noblemen: Your cozy home in Amsterdam

During our stay in Amsterdam, we stayed in the Signature Room “Michiel de Ruyter” of the Hotel The Noblemen. This small boutique hotel is centrally located in the heart of Amsterdam and impresses with its historic charm combined with modern amenities.

The “Michiel de Ruyter” room, named after the famous Dutch admiral, is uniquely designed and combines classic elegance with maritime details reminiscent of the admiral’s life. High-quality wooden furniture, an elegant freestanding bathtub and historical works of art create an atmosphere that is both luxurious and cozy. A special highlight is the large, comfortable bed, which is furnished with fine bed linen and guarantees you the most restful sleep.

The hotel only offers bed and breakfast. And that’s not a bad thing, because as far as breakfast is concerned, you won’t be disappointed here. On arrival, we chose what and when we wanted to have breakfast over the next few days. Breakfast is then served in the room, as there is no restaurant. We found this very cozy. The hotel offers several vegan breakfast options and we ordered pretty much everything from the menu that was vegan. From fresh fruit and vegetable platters, porridge, yoghurt to peanut butter.

My highlight: Starting the day with a delicious cappuccino in bed while gazing out of the large glass windows into the hotel’s beautiful inner courtyard.

Little Plant Pantry: sustainability meets indulgence

On day 1, we went to the “Little Plant Pantry“. For anyone who wants to eat sustainably as well as deliciously, the Little Plant Pantry is an absolute must. This charming restaurant is also a zero-waste store and offers an impressive selection of plant-based dishes made from fresh, organic ingredients.

The atmosphere here is calm and relaxed, perfect for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. You can look forward to a changing menu that focuses on seasonal and local ingredients. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you’ll find healthy, tasty options that will please both your palate and your conscience.

We ate the vegan stroganoff with cashew cream and the lasagna and drank the kefir lemonade with hibiscus. The food was delicious. And while you’re there, take a look at the little store where you can buy sustainable products for your daily needs – in keeping with the zero-waste concept. I found it very charming.

After this lasting and delicious experience, it was time for one of my absolute favorite meals on day 2 … Sushi!

Vegan Sushi Bar: A trip to Japan in the middle of Amsterdam

Sushi and vegan? Absolutely! In the “Vegan Sushi Bar” on Kinkerstraat, you will experience just how creative and delicious vegan sushi can be. This small but fine restaurant offers a variety of innovative sushi creations that not only taste great, but are also a visual highlight.

The menus are varied and include everything from classic maki rolls to spectacular signature rolls such as the “Shrimpless Tempura Crunch” or the “Flambé Salmon”, which is filled with a colorful mix of fresh vegetables. Every bite is an explosion of flavor and texture.

What makes this place special is the attention to detail and the dedication that goes into every dish. Here, fish is not simply replaced by vegetables – the dishes are well thought out, refined and offer a real taste experience.

My personal favorite: The “Crunchy California Dream” rolls – spicy, aromatic and just the thing if you like it a little crunchy.

After this colorful journey through the world of vegan sushi, our next stop on day 3 was a lively, hip hotspot…

Happiness is at home when traveling.

Vegan junk food bar: creative street food creations

Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the “Vegan Junk Food Bar“. This place is a paradise for anyone craving something really hearty. There’s nothing here that isn’t available – from crispy “Ringz & Wingz”, to “Loaded Fries” bathed in an irresistible mix of sauces and toppings, to colorful “Pink Bun” burgers that are almost too pretty to eat.

The atmosphere is lively, urban and a little rebellious – exactly what you would expect from a place that completely redefines the concept of junk food. Even if the name might suggest that it’s all about unhealthy food, the dishes are prepared with a lot of love and high-quality ingredients.

My tip: order the cruelty-free burger – a true masterpiece that is guaranteed to fill you up and make you happy. And don’t forget to try one of their vegan milkshakes – creamy, sweet and simply irresistible.

But what would Amsterdam be without a sweet ending? That’s why we went to Margo’s on the last day.

Margo's Amsterdam Jordaan: a sweet and savory finale

No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a detour to “Margo’s Amsterdam Jordaan“, a charming bakery in the heart of the picturesque Jordaan district. Not only does it serve the most delicious vegan baked goods, but also incredibly good vegan sandwiches that you should definitely not miss out on.

Margo’s is known for its sustainable concept, which can be felt in every detail – from the choice of ingredients to the environmentally friendly packaging. This philosophy is also reflected in the sandwiches, which are prepared with fresh, local and organic ingredients.

My absolute favorite: The “SATAY!” sandwich, with seitan satay, peanut sauce, pickled acar, red and crispy onions and salad – an outrageously good combination!

It’s best to enjoy your sandwich in the nearby Westerpark if the weather cooperates, as this is unfortunately not possible in the bakery itself. Because there are no tables to sit at – it is designed for “to go”. Margo’s also has a second location in Amsterdam. The Margo’s Amsterdam Bellamy. There is also seating there.

Extra tip: You should definitely make a reservation if you want to eat after 6 pm. The Vegan Junk Food Bar in particular is often very busy and it can be difficult to get a table without a reservation. We barely managed to get a table in the Junk Food Bar at 5 pm for a 45-minute time slot. So if you want to enjoy your meal stress-free, you should definitely make a reservation.

Happy Cow: Your digital companion

The Happy Cow app was a real lifesaver during our restaurant search in Amsterdam. It quickly and reliably shows you the best vegan and vegetarian spots nearby, including reviews and important information. We were able to easily discover great restaurants and be sure that we would always find a delicious vegan option.

And for quick snacks or a meal in the hotel…

Vegan snacks to go at Albert Heijn

Another plus point was the visit to Albert Heijn, one of the largest supermarket chains in the Netherlands. We went to three different branches and each of them had an impressive selection of vegan ready-made salads and sandwiches. These were not only delicious and fresh, but also super convenient – perfect to take back to the hotel room or enjoy on the nearest cozy park bench.

There are numerous Albert Heijn stores in Amsterdam, spread all over the city. No matter where you are, a branch is usually just a few minutes’ walk away. This means you can get a vegan meal quickly and easily at any time, whether for a snack between meals or a relaxed dinner at the hotel. This flexibility made our stay even more enjoyable and shows how vegan-friendly Amsterdam really is.

Amsterdam offers so many vegan highlights that it is difficult to experience them all in a single visit. The best thing to do is simply let yourself be surprised by the wonderful city and its culinary delights. Whether it’s decadent junk food, fancy sushi or good old lasagna – Amsterdam has something for every vegan palate. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and experience Amsterdam in a whole new, vegan way!

I wish you lots of fun with it. 🖤
