In a world where natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce, the issue of saving water is of enormous importance. Water is the basis of all life, and yet we often waste it without thinking. In this blog article, I would like to show you why saving water is so important, how much water we Austrians use every day and how we can effectively save water in our everyday lives. Because there are many areas in the household in particular where we can use water more efficiently. Together with you, we will find out how we can reduce our water consumption in the kitchen and thus make a valuable contribution to environmental protection.

Why is saving water so important?

Water is one of the most precious resources on our planet. Without water, there is no life. Yet despite its vital importance, we often use it wastefully. Climate change, population growth and environmental pollution are putting a strain on water resources worldwide. Even though Austria is rich in water compared to other countries, we must not forget that water is a global resource and that we all have a responsibility to protect it and use it sustainably.

By saving water, we make a direct contribution to environmental protection. We reduce the amount of energy required for water treatment and distribution, protect natural water reservoirs and help to reduce the ecological footprint. Every drop counts, and even small changes in everyday life can have a big impact.

How much water do we use every day?

The average water consumption in Austria is around 130 liters per person per day. This consumption is made up of various areas of daily life:

  • Personal hygiene (bathing, showering, brushing teeth): approx. 40 liters
  • Toilet flush: approx. 30 liters
  • Laundry: approx. 15 liters
  • Dishwashing: approx. 10 liters
  • Cooking and drinking: approx. 5 liters
  • Other (garden, cleaning, etc.): approx. 30 liters

These figures make it clear that there are many starting points for reducing our water consumption.

10 tips for saving water in the kitchen

The kitchen offers numerous opportunities to reduce our water consumption. It is often the small, everyday actions that make a big difference. Find out here how you can effectively save water in your kitchen.

1. dishwasher fully loaded: A fully loaded dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand. Modern appliances are also very water-efficient.

2. do not leave the water running when washing up: When washing up by hand, do not leave the water running all the time. It is better to fill the sink or a bowl.

3. reuse cooking water: The water in which vegetables or pasta have been cooked can be used to water plants once it has cooled.

4. use a water filter: Instead of buying bottled water again and again, use a water filter. This not only saves water, but also plastic.

5. use the dishwasher correctly: Only run full loads and use the Eco program to save water and energy.

6. use a double-compartment sink: Fill one side with soapy water and the other with clean water to wash and rinse dishes without leaving the faucet running constantly.

7. reduce the flow rate: turn the valves under the sink slightly so that less water comes out of the taps at the top, even if they are turned on fully.

8. use a bowl: Wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl instead of under running water. This not only saves water, but also money for waste water disposal.

9. use a dishwasher: Modern dishwashers use less water than hand washing. Use the energy-saving program and make sure that the machine is fully loaded.

10. collect washing water: The washing water from fruit and vegetables can be used for watering flowers or flushing the toilet.
