Water is one of our most valuable resources – and yet it is often wasted. Only 2.5% of the Earth’s water is freshwater, and of this, just 0.3% is easily accessible to us. The reason: the large remainder is in glaciers, polar ice or deep underground water layers that are difficult or impossible to tap. At the same time, around 500 million people worldwide suffer from water shortages. Climate change and increasing consumption are further exacerbating the situation.
But here’s the good news: you can easily do something yourself! There is plenty of potential for savings, especially in the bathroom and toilet. Even small changes in habit add up and make a big difference. Start today – with these 12 tips for saving water:
12 simple tips to save water
1. take shorter showers: You use around 15 liters of water per minute in the shower. If you reduce your shower time by just two minutes, you can save up to 200 liters per week!
2. use an economy shower head: Modern shower heads reduce the water flow by up to 50%, often without any loss of comfort, as they enrich the water with air.
3. use a toothbrush cup: If you let the water run while brushing your teeth, you lose about 5 liters per minute. A toothbrush mug helps to avoid this.
4. use a toilet flush with an economy button: An economy button can halve the water consumption per flush. If you don’t have one yet, it’s worth retrofitting.

5. keep an eye on your shower time: Set yourself a goal: 5 minutes is often enough! If you find it difficult, a waterproof hourglass or music playlist can help.
6. install a flow limiter: Little helpers with a big effect! These can be fitted to shower heads and taps to reduce the flow of water.
7. showering instead of bathing: A full bath can use up to 150 liters of water, a short shower often only a third of that.
8. water off when soaping up: Simply turn off the water when shampooing or shaving – this saves up to 30 liters per shower.

9. retrofitting a stop button for the toilet: A stop button can reduce water consumption per flush by up to 50 %. It is inexpensive and easy to install.
10. descaling the cistern: Limescale deposits can cause the cistern to use more water than necessary. Cleaning with vinegar or citric acid ensures efficient flushing performance.
11. collect cold water: While you are waiting for hot water from the tap, a lot of cold water often runs down the drain unused. Catch it in a bucket or bowl and use it for watering flowers or cleaning.
12. fix leaks in good time: A dripping tap or a leaking toilet flush can waste hundreds of liters of water per month. Regular maintenance and quick repairs help to prevent unnecessary water loss.
Every drop counts!
Saving water is not a big effort – it starts with small, conscious decisions in everyday life. The more people join in, the greater the impact on our environment.
