Sustainability starts in everyday life – even when cleaning. At a time when climate change and pollution are becoming ever greater challenges, small conscious choices at home can make a big difference. Sustainable cleaning products are an easy yet powerful way to keep your home sparkling clean while protecting the planet. In this article, you’ll discover what to look out for in eco-friendly cleaning products and how simple changes in your daily routine can have a lasting positive impact.
The benefits of sustainable cleaning products for the environment
The main advantage of sustainable cleaning products is clear: they are much gentler on our environment than conventional cleaners. Traditional cleaning agents often contain a variety of harmful chemicals that are released into the air and water during use, polluting ecosystems. These include phosphates, which contribute to the over-fertilisation of rivers and lakes, and synthetic fragrances, which can trigger allergies.
Eco-friendly cleaning products, on the other hand, rely on natural ingredients that are biodegradable and non-toxic. They’re safer for both your health and the environment, making them a truly sustainable alternative. What’s more, many eco brands are cruelty-free – an important aspect for us vegans who care deeply about animal welfare.
Sustainable cleaning brands in Austria
Austria is home to a growing number of companies dedicated to developing sustainable, environmentally friendly cleaning products. Here are some well-known brands you can find in many shops and online:
- Claro: This brand produces dishwashing tabs and detergents made from natural ingredients that are completely biodegradable and free from colorants and fragrances. Packed in compostable grass cardboard. I wouldn’t want to be without the Claro rinse aid for another day.
- Pernauer Chemiewerke GmbH: The company focuses on sustainable detergents, cleaners and soaps whose formulas are based on surfactants made from rapeseed oil, sunflower oil or palm oil-free sugar surfactants. The company has even developed its own cold saponification process, which requires significantly less energy than conventional saponification to make production even more environmentally friendly. I particularly like the ROY DE LIN series.
- Planet Pure: Is one of my favorite brands. All Planet Pure products are free from microplastics, genetic engineering and nanotechnology. With the exception of washing-up liquid, all products are free from palm and palm kernel oil. All ingredients are easily and completely biodegradable. All products are also vegan.
- Uni-Sapon: The environmentally friendly cleaner from the Ländle. The cleaners are offered as concentrates, combined with empty spray bottles for dilution, which saves you a huge amount of plastic packaging. I think the “zero waste concept” from Uni-Sapon is particularly nice!
A look across the border:
Ecover: The German company relies on biodegradable plant-based ingredients. All bottle bodies are made from recycled plastic. In addition, all products are free from microparticles or microplastics, vegan and cruelty-free. I really like the fabric softener from Ecover with apple blossom & almond, it smells so wonderful.
Extra tip:
The environmental consultancy Öko-Rein: Here you will find an extensive database of ecological detergents and cleaning products that are based on plant-based ingredients and are available in sustainable packaging. Very helpful, I think!
Natural alternatives for eco-friendly cleaning
In addition to ready-made sustainable cleaning products, you can also turn to tried-and-tested natural household remedies to keep your home clean. Vinegar, citric acid, soda crystals, baking soda and baking powder are all excellent natural cleaners. Vinegar is perfect for descaling, citric acid removes stubborn limescale and stains, and baking soda is great for neutralising odours. Soda crystals, on the other hand, are powerful grease removers. Especially when cleaning surfaces in the kitchen or bathroom, washing soda can easily compete with conventional products – but is much gentler on the environment.
