They\u2019re essential for many functions in your body \u2013 and as the name suggests, they\u2019re essential, meaning your body can\u2019t produce them on its own. You need to get them from your diet, or from supplements if necessary.<\/p><p>There are two key essential fatty acids:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)<\/strong> \u2013 from the omega-3 family<\/li><li><strong>Linoleic acid<\/strong> \u2013 from the omega-6 family<\/li><\/ul><p>Then there are so-called <strong>conditionally essential fatty acids<\/strong>:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Your body can technically convert ALA into EPA and DHA \u2013 but only in very small amounts. The conversion rate from ALA to EPA is around 8\u201312%, and for DHA it\u2019s often less than 1%. Stress, alcohol, poor diet, and even your general health can make this conversion even less efficient. That\u2019s why many experts recommend getting EPA and DHA directly \u2013 especially important if you eat plant-based, since you\u2019re skipping the main animal sources. [5]   <\/li><li><strong>Heart health: <\/strong>EPA and DHA can help lower high cholesterol, improve triglyceride levels, regulate blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. A lack of omega-3 has been linked to mood disorders and cognitive decline. The publication is considered the first comprehensive global analysis to compare national and international omega-3 intake recommendations across all stages of life. Plant-based sources provide ALA, which your body can (partially) convert into EPA and DHA: <\/p><ul><li>Flaxseeds &amp; flaxseed oil (especially rich in ALA)<\/li><li>Chia seeds<\/li><li>Hemp seeds<\/li><li>Walnuts<\/li><li>Rapeseed oil<\/li><li>Algae oil (the only direct vegan source of EPA and DHA!)<\/li><\/ul><p>Important: ALA is great \u2013 but it\u2019s only the precursor. During <strong>pregnancy and lactation<\/strong>, an additional intake of <strong>100\u2013200 mg of DHA per day<\/strong> is advised, as DHA plays an important role in the normal development of the child\u2019s brain and vision. [22,23]<\/p><p>For EPA and DHA, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and the Austrian Nutrition Society (\u00d6GE) do not provide specific reference values, but they do recommend that ALA should make up 0.5% of your total energy intake. For someone consuming 2,100 kcal per day, that\u2019s about 1.1 to 1.5 g of ALA. [15] You\u2019ll get that amount from:<\/p><ul><li>1 tbsp cold-pressed flaxseed oil<\/li><li>1 tbsp ground flaxseeds<\/li><li>1 tbsp chia seeds<\/li><li>30 g walnuts<\/li><\/ul><p>Some studies suggest that vegans should aim for even more \u2013 up to 2\u20134 g of ALA daily. [1]<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0815f87 elementor-section-stretched elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0815f87\" data-element_type=\"section\" Arachidonic acid, found in animal products, promotes the production of substances that increase inflammation and pain.  <\/p><p>When omega-6 is high and omega-3 is low, inflammation can spiral \u2013 raising the risk of chronic illnesses like arthritis or cardiovascular disease. <strong>Ideally, your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio should be about 4:1<\/strong>. In the Western diet, it\u2019s often more like 10:1 to 20:1 \u2013 far too skewed. Processed foods and ready meals are packed with hidden omega-6s \u2013 so best to avoid them when you can.  <\/p><p>With a plant-based diet, you\u2019re already avoiding arachidonic acid.
