Dry facial skin can be really annoying, can’t it? It itches, tightens and sometimes even flakes. But don’t worry, I have the best tips and tricks for you to make your skin glow again. In this article, you’ll learn all about the causes of dry skin and how you can take care of it with simple products. Let’s take up the fight against dry skin together!
How do you recognize dry facial skin?
Dry skin is often characterized by an unpleasant feeling of tightness, especially after washing. It can appear rough and flaky, sometimes red and irritated. Fine lines and cracks can appear, and make-up is often difficult to apply and looks blotchy. You’re probably familiar with this, right?
What causes dry facial skin?
Now you may be wondering why your skin is so dry in the first place. There are many causes that can lead to dry skin, such as
- Environmental factors: Cold air in winter and dry heating air can remove moisture from the skin.
- Skin care: Overly aggressive cleansers and hot showers can damage the skin’s natural protective barrier.
- Diet: An unbalanced diet that is low in essential fatty acids and vitamins can dry out the skin.
- Genetics: Some people simply have a genetic tendency to dry skin.
- Age: With increasing age, the skin produces less sebum, which can lead to dryness.
Dry skin in women & men: is there a difference?
Interestingly, women are more frequently affected by dry skin than men. There are several reasons why this is the case:
- Hormonal differences: Women’s hormone levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy and during the menopause. These hormonal changes can affect the skin barrier and lead to dryness.
- Skin structure: Women tend to have thinner skin than men, which means that their skin barrier is more easily damaged and retains less moisture.
- Cosmetic products: Women generally use more cosmetics and skincare products than men. Some of these products may contain aggressive ingredients that dry out the skin.
- Ageing: With increasing age, sebum production in women decreases more than in men, especially after the menopause, which can lead to dry skin.
Although men are less frequently affected by dry skin, they can also suffer from it, especially if they use harsh shaving products or are exposed to extreme weather conditions.

What can you do to combat dry facial skin?
There are many ways to treat and care for dry skin. Here are some useful tips:
- Gentle cleansing: Use mild, moisturizing cleansing products that do not further dry out your skin.
- Moisturizing: Apply a rich moisturizer regularly, ideally directly after showering or washing.
- Protection: Protect your skin from extreme weather conditions by applying an oily cream in winter and sunscreen in summer.
- Humidifier: A humidifier in the bedroom can work wonders, especially in the cold months.
- Drink: Make sure you drink enough water. Around two to three liters a day is recommended to hydrate your skin from the inside.
Which home remedies help against dry facial skin?

Exfoliation: friend or foe?
Exfoliation can be both beneficial and harmful to dry skin, depending on how you use it. Gentle exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and improve the absorption of moisture. Be sure to choose a mild, non-abrasive exfoliator and use it no more than once a week. If this is too much for you, you can exfoliate just once every 10 days. Excessive exfoliation can irritate the skin and exacerbate dryness, so monitor your skin closely after exfoliating.
